Gioan sinh năm 1542 tại Fontibéros nước Tây Ban Nha. Sau quãng đời niên thiếu phải làm lụng vất vả, anh tận hiến cho Chúa trong dòng Cát Minh năm 1563.

Trước ngày thụ phong linh mục (1567), thánh nhân đã gặp thánh nữ Têrêxa Avila. Cuộc gặp gỡ quyết định hướng đi cho cuộc sống của ngài., cộng tác với thánh nữ trong việc cải tổ dòng trên 33 đan viện Cát Minh nam và nữ, cho đến khi thánh nữ qua đời năm 1582.

 

 

Thánh Gioan đã chọn cho mình danh hiệu Thánh Giá, cùng với hai người bạn khởi sự cuộc cải tổ, dù bị chính anh em trong Dòng cản trở. Năm 1577, ngài bị biệt giam, sau chín thánh ngài mới thoát được. Trong thời gian này, ngài đã sáng tác những vần thơ thần bí, nổi tiếng nhất là tác phẩm “Đường lên núi Carmel”, và “Ngọn lửa tình yêu”

Ít lâu sau, cộng đoàn chấp nhận cuộc cải cách của ngài và trao phó nhiều chức vụ quan trọng. Đời ngài như một ngọn lửa tình yêu soi chiếu trong đêm tối, mở ra một linh đạo mới.

Thánh nhân đã lên tới đỉnh trọn lành và sẵn sàng nâng đỡ những ai bước theo đức tin trên con đường thần bí. “Nếu nơi nào thiếu tình yêu, chúng ta hãy thắp lên một ngọn lửa tình yêu và chúng ta sẽ nhận được ánh sáng của tình yêu. Để khi cuộc đời chấm dứt, chúng ta sẽ được xét xử căn cứ vào tình yêu.”

Năm 1591, ngài được Chúa gọi về.
Năm 1926, ngài được đức Piô XI suy tôn lên hàng “Tiến Sĩ Hội Thánh”.
